Things to Do in Antibes

Antibes wears its history on its ramparts — a fortified old town built by the Greeks and rebuilt by Vauban, wrapped around a harbour that once sheltered Picasso, who painted some of his most joyful work here in what's now the Musée Picasso. The daily Marché Provençal is one of the best food markets on the coast.

Antibes' old town sits behind sea walls rebuilt by Vauban. Start at the Château Grimaldi, where Picasso worked in 1946 and which now houses the Musée Picasso, then wander down to the covered Marché Provençal on Cours Masséna for olives, cheese and flowers. From the Bastion Saint-Jaume, Jaume Plensa's giant Nomade sculpture looks out over the sea.

Port Vauban is one of Europe's largest marinas, with the famous 'billionaires' quay' of superyachts beneath the star-shaped Fort Carré. Beyond town, the Cap d'Antibes coastal path winds along wild limestone shores, and the Garoupe lighthouse offers views from the Alps to the Esterel.

Events and the best time to visit Antibes

Summer belongs to Juan-les-Pins, Antibes' seaside twin, where Jazz à Juan has filled the Pinède Gould pine grove every July since 1960. The rest of the year the town keeps a lively programme of concerts, exhibitions and markets, and the old town is at its most atmospheric out of season.

Late spring and September are the best months for combining sightseeing with the sandy beaches of Juan-les-Pins and La Garoupe. July and August are busy but festive, with jazz, evening markets and nightlife.

Getting to Antibes and getting around

Antibes is about 20 km from Nice Côte d'Azur Airport. Trains stop at both Antibes and Juan-les-Pins stations, around 20–25 minutes from Nice and 10–15 minutes from Cannes.

The old town, market and port are all within a short walk of the station. Local Envibus buses cover the Cap d'Antibes and Juan-les-Pins, and the coastal path is best explored on foot.
